It was the first song recorded when the group got back to the studio on 23 March 1976, at Metronome Studios in Stockholm. Released on 18 February 1977 as the third single from Arrival, with Happy Hawaii on the B-side, it is an early ABBA song about the break-up of a relationship, and it predates the divorces of the members. Lyngstad sings the lead. Andersson later called it one of their five best recordings.

It was number one in the UK, West Germany, Ireland, Mexico, South Africa and Belgium. In the UK it has sold 1.02 million as of September 2021, the third-biggest ABBA song there. Rolling Stone placed it second in its 2021 list of the 25 greatest ABBA songs. Lasse Hallström directed the video. Steve Coogan's Alan Partridge show Knowing Me, Knowing You took its title from the song. It appears in 88 of the 273 logged ABBA setlists that list songs, the earliest on 29 September 1976 and the latest on 29 April 1981. Many of these entries are television studio performances.
