Tears Are Not Enough

The debut single, a UK number 19 that Fry called a manifesto.
ABC, from The Lexicon of Love (1981)

Released
16 October 1981
Album
The Lexicon of Love

Released on 16 October 1981 on 7-inch and 12-inch by Neutron and Phonogram, it was produced by Steve Brown. The single versions differ from the one on The Lexicon of Love, which Trevor Horn remixed for the album. It peaked at 19 on the UK chart, and NME ranked it seventh among the ten best tracks of 1981. In the US it was the B-side of Poison Arrow. The B-side was Alphabet Soup, which the BBC's Rob Webb called their calling card, and described as James Brown-inspired. David Robinson plays drums on the single and demo versions.

Fry said in 2015 that it was the first thing the band ever did and that it was all there already: a manifesto, with its line about searching for certainty in such an unstable world. Dave Simpson of the Guardian heard a funky, brassy version when the band played the album in Birmingham in 2019.
