Released on 23 October 1972, with sessions through that year, it peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and number one on the R&B albums chart. Look What You Done for Me had come out in March as its lead single, ahead of the album, and reached number four on the Hot 100. The title song spent two weeks at number one on the Hot Soul Singles chart in August and reached number three on the Hot 100. Pitchfork's 2009 review said it repeated the Let's Stay Together formula, right down to the unlikely six-and-a-half-minute cover, this time Kris Kristofferson's For the Good Times. But where the earlier album was mostly about not wanting to break up, it said, this one was solidly love songs, and better. It also thought Green had learned to write to his voice's strengths, above all his falsetto, and called Simply Beautiful close-miked and nearly whispered.

The second track, I'm Glad You're Mine, opens with a drum pattern that Howard Grimes came up with when Mitchell wanted something a little crazy on the front. Grimes told Rolling Stone he took the idea from Lee Dorsey's Working in the Coal Mine. The break lasts around twelve seconds and has been sampled more than 200 times, notably by the Notorious B.I.G. on Dead Wrong with Eminem. Grimes also said Mitchell took Al Jackson Jr. off the kit during Love and Happiness and put him on it, because Mitchell wanted the track funky.

Reception

Rolling Stone placed the album at number 285 on its 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums, 286 in 2012 and 306 in 2020. The compilation Al Green's Greatest Hits (1975) reached number three on the soul albums chart, and Pitchfork says its current track list takes three songs from this album.
