Green wrote it with Teenie Hodges, and Willie Mitchell produced it at the 1972 session for Call Me. Hi released it as a single in June 1973, backed with I'm Glad You're Mine, and it followed the title track from the album. It reached number 10 on the Hot 100 and number two on the Hot Soul Singles chart, and sold more than 500,000 copies, earning a gold certification. In its 2008 review of Lay It Down, Pitchfork cited the major-minor changeups in that album's songs as the same trick Green and Mitchell pulled off on songs like this one.
UB40 recorded it as the second single from Labour of Love II in January 1990. It stalled at number 46 in the UK but reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, number three in Australia and number six in New Zealand. Michael Jackson, Etta James and Seal have also covered it, and reggae versions have been recorded by Marcia Griffiths, Pluto Shervington, Owen Gray and Inner Circle. The song was used in the film adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
