Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie

After the 18-month tour for Jagged Little Pill, Morissette went to India, and the trip gave the album its concept. The cover carries phrases from eight Buddhist precepts, and the title comes from a lyric in So Pure. She wrote Thank U and Baba after returning from India. She co-produced the album with Ballard, and played flute, harmonica and piano on it. The band included Nick Lashley and Joel Shearer on guitar, Chris Chaney on bass and Gary Novak on drums.

In the United States it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 469,000 copies in its first week, beating the 423,000 that Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill had sold. Thank U was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and So Pure for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. The album won the Juno Award for Album of the Year in 2000. Most reviews were favorable. AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine called it a clear step forward, and Robert Christgau said he felt privileged to listen along with the young women whose struggles she blows up to such a scale. Entertainment Weekly's David Browne later singled it out as a 1990s low point, and Q listed it among the worst albums ever.

She toured on the Junkie Tour from January 1999, with Garbage and Liz Phair among the openers, and in the summer of 1999 co-headlined a run with Tori Amos. In 2024 the record was reissued as the Thank U Edition by Rhino, with new cover art and five bonus tracks.
