Morissette and Ballard wrote it, and Maverick and Reprise released it as the second single on 16 October 1995. It is in G major at 92 beats per minute. Morissette sings and plays harmonica, and Ballard plays guitar and keyboards and produced, recorded and mixed it. The Guardian reported in 2025 that she wrote it at 19, out of her habit of holding many opinions at once, which people at the time found unnerving.
It was her first number one in Canada and her second on the US Modern Rock chart. It also reached number 4 on the Top 40 Mainstream chart. It was not issued as a CD single, so it was not eligible for the Hot 100. In the UK it reached number 26. Mark Kohr directed the black-and-white, slow motion video, which was filmed in the Windsor Terrace neighborhood of Brooklyn and shows her in a homecoming parade. NME's Mark Sutherland called it a bite-the-hand assault on slackerdom.
The song was the theme of the unaired pilot of Dawson's Creek, though she decided against using it once the series was picked up. It appears in the film Lady Bird, and Naya Rivera and Heather Morris sang it on Glee in a mashup with Carole King's I Feel the Earth Move.
Live
Morissette opened her Glastonbury set on the Pyramid stage on 27 June 2025 with it, after a trill on the harmonica, and the Guardian noted that the crowd could join in the peace sign and cigarette gestures.
