Released as a single in January 1991 from Facelift, Man in the Box reached number 18 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1992. Cantrell played talk box on the song, an idea that came from producer Dave Jerden. In the Music Bank liner notes Cantrell said the beat and grind of the song was where the band started to find themselves.
Staley told Rolling Stone in 1992 that he began by writing about censorship, then heard from vegetarian Columbia staff how veal calves were raised in small boxes, and wrote about government censorship and eating meat from the point of view of a doomed calf. Paul Rachman directed the video, set in a barn, and MTV nominated it for Best Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Video at the 1991 Video Music Awards. It was the closing song of the band's last show with Staley, on 3 July 1996.
