Island Records released the album on 2 December 2011. It was announced on 31 October that year and compiled by Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson with the consent of the Winehouse family, who listened to thousands of hours of her vocals. It was released in aid of the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Island co-president Ted Cockle stressed that it was not the follow-up to Back to Black. The first single was Body and Soul, her duet with Tony Bennett, out on 14 September 2011, and the second was Our Day Will Come, released on 4 December. Like Smoke features Nas, and the cover photograph was taken by Bryan Adams in 2007.
Besides covers it holds the original ballad version of Tears Dry on Their Own and an alternate version of Wake Up Alone. Half Time is an outtake from the Frank sessions. Andrew Ryce of Pitchfork called the set odds-and-sods cobbled together over nine years of recordings, and the original Tears Dry an almost unrecognizably elegiac arrangement. He found little that sounded throwaway and little that sounded absolutely essential. Metacritic gives it an average of 65 from 28 reviews.
It debuted at number one in the UK with 194,966 copies, the biggest first week of her career, and went triple platinum in 2020. In the US it debuted at five with 114,000 units. By the end of 2011 it had sold 2.4 million copies worldwide.
