Baker's debut solo album was released in May 1983 by Beverly Glen Music and was her only album for the label. It was not a commercial success on release, though it did moderately well on the R&B charts. Angel reached number five on the Hot Black Singles chart, You're the Best Thing Yet number 28 and No More Tears number 49. Patrick Moten played keyboards and arranged the rhythm section and backing vocals, and the guitarists included Paul Jackson Jr. and David T. Walker. Alex Henderson of AllMusic rated it three and a half stars and praised its ballads. After Baker moved to Elektra, the label acquired the rights and reissued it in 1991 with a new cover. Between 1992 and 2007 it sold 307,000 copies in the United States.
