Anohni wrote, arranged and produced it, singing and playing piano and organ, and it was tracked in 2004 by Dick Kondas and Emery Dobyns and mixed by Doug Henderson. It opens with a hope that someone will take care of her when she dies. It was the album's lead single, issued by Rough Trade in the UK and Secretly Canadian in the US, with Frankenstein and Just One Star added on the American CD. It reached No. 44 in the UK. Pitchfork named it the best single of 2005 and the 28th best of the decade.
Stereogum's 2025 retrospective hears it as a song about being stuck in limbo, a state that fits gender dysphoria but also the thresholds between childhood and adulthood, and between life and death. Magnet reported that bassist Jeff Langston's sister used it in a workshop for Christian women, a use Anohni said she could never have foreseen. Hudson Mohawke has said that hearing it at a Glasgow after-party in the mid-2000s reduced him to tears, the start of the road to their collaboration on Hopelessness.
Glen Fogel directed the 2005 video, which stars Joey Gabriel half asleep in bed, fully clothed, in close-ups of her face and stockinged feet as she scatters flower petals. A still from it became the single's sleeve, and Anohni later chose it for the Criterion Channel's collection of her videos. The song also appears in Isabel Coixet's film The Secret Life of Words (2005). Avicii covered it on True in 2013, with Linnea Henriksson singing. The upload in the hypersongs web is the official Glen Fogel video, with the album audio.
