Franklin and Ted White wrote it, and she was the first to record it. Atlantic released it as a single in 1968 from Aretha Now. It reached number 7 on the Hot 100, her seventh US top ten, and number 1 on the R&B chart, her sixth single to top it. Billboard called it a pulsating swinger with another wild performance, and Cash Box noted its tremendous rhythmic drive. Jerry Wexler produced, with Tom Dowd and Arif Mardin arranging. Pitchfork put it at number 15 on its list of the 200 greatest songs of the 1960s.
She re-recorded it twice. A 3:15 version made for The Blues Brothers (1980) features the Blues Brothers band, with her sister Carolyn and cousin Brenda Corbett singing backup, and a 3:38 version called Think (1989) appeared on Through the Storm, produced and arranged by Arif Mardin with his son Joe Mardin.
