Spike Lee asked Speech to write a song for his film Malcolm X, and Revolution appeared on the soundtrack. Speech said he felt a personal responsibility to acknowledge the need for struggle, which shows in the line asking whether he is doing as much as he can for the struggle. He wrote it to urge people to act. Lee directed the video himself, shooting in a high school, on a city block and on a street in Brooklyn with about 500 extras. Speech said it was filmed in seven hours.
