The rhythms were cut at Randy's with Carlton Barrett on drums, Aston Barrett and Robbie Shakespeare on bass and Earl Chinna Smith on guitar, then taken to Tubby's to be stripped down and rebuilt. Most are remixes of Pablo's own earlier hits or recuts of older rhythms: Keep On Dubbing is Jacob Miller's Keep On Knocking, and Satta is the Abyssinians' Satta Massagana. The sleeve's tracklist was printed wrong, and the American Clocktower issue reportedly appeared without Pablo's permission.

AllMusic called it perhaps the finest collaboration between two of instrumental reggae's leading lights, The Guardian a pivotal moment in modern music, and Mojo placed it second among the greatest reggae albums, behind Catch a Fire. It found a following among British punks through Don Letts' DJ sets at the Roxy.
