Maurice sang lead on Melody Fair, which appeared on Odessa in 1969. Barry said it was probably written in the studio and was probably influenced by Eleanor Rigby. The writing was finished on 25 October 1968, and the demo was recorded the next day at IBC. It is one of a handful of songs in which Barry makes some use of falsetto.
It was not released as a single in the US or UK, but it was issued as a single in Japan in May 1971, where it reached No. 3, and it has sold 500,000 copies there. The song played over the opening titles of the 1971 film Melody and later appeared on the compilation Best of Bee Gees, Volume 2 in 1973. Andy Gibb's 1974 group Melody Fayre took its name from the song. Among the 320 logged setlists that list songs, it appears in 11.
