Albini played nearly every instrument, with sax bleats from his college friend John Bohnen and drums from Roland. It was recorded on a TEAC 3340 that was lent to him in exchange for a case of beer. He used the tape to try to enlist other musicians, and Ruthless Records pressed fifteen hundred copies. The first pressing came with random objects in the inserts, among them dollar bills, bloody pieces of paper and photographs of Bruce Lee.
Albini came to dislike it, finding it too slavishly imitative of the Cure, Killing Joke and Cabaret Voltaire. Michael Azerrad described it as cold, dark and resolutely unlistenable. Trouser Press called it at once the most homegrown and overwrought Big Black release. Touch and Go reissued it in 1992.
