Sam Andrew wrote Combination of the Two, which opens Cheap Thrills. The voice of Bill Graham introduces the band at the start. Andrew called it a rave up for the audience to have a good time. He said he was aiming for Motown and was thinking of Marvin Gaye's Ain't That Peculiar, using the same two chords, though he thought it came nowhere near.

It was one of the two songs the band played at Monterey on the second evening, when the cameras were allowed in. A 6:58 live version is on Live at Winterland '68.
