13 was released on 7 June 2013 in parts of Europe and Australasia, on 10 June in Britain and on 11 June in North America, through Republic in the United States and Vertigo elsewhere. It was the band's nineteenth and last studio album, their first in 18 years, and the first with Osbourne and Butler together since the live album Reunion. Rick Rubin produced. A first attempt with Rubin in spring 2001 stopped when Osbourne left to finish his solo album Down to Earth.

Ward did not take part after a contract dispute. Tommy Clufetos was present as the album developed, but Rubin pressed for another drummer, and Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine played drums and percussion. Iommi was diagnosed with lymphoma in January 2012, and sessions moved to his home in England. Osbourne played harmonica and Iommi keyboards. Greg Fidelman engineered and Andrew Scheps mixed. Butler said the title came from the label wanting 13 songs when the band wanted to stop at 10, and only eight tracks made the final cut. The cover was an eight-foot wicker 13 set alight in the Buckinghamshire countryside.

The album reached number 1 in Britain, their first chart-topper there since Paranoid in 1970, and number 1 in the United States, selling 155,000 copies in its first week. It reached number 1 in Canada, was Gold in the UK, and passed one million copies worldwide by July 2014. Metacritic scored it 72 from 32 reviews. AllMusic's Fred Thomas called it unexpectedly brilliant, and critics including Ben Ratliff of the New York Times objected to its loud, compressed mastering. God Is Dead? won the 2014 Grammy for Best Metal Performance, and the band played End of the Beginning on the season 13 finale of CSI.
