John Casner recorded Foley over two nights at the Austin Outhouse in December 1988, about a month before his death. Foley had pawned his nylon-strung guitar with its built-in pickup, so he played a borrowed steel-string that Casner miked, and the manager Chuck Lamb's cash register rings in the background. He meant it as a live album for Heartland Records and as a demo for singers like Merle Haggard, whom he talks to between songs. Guests over the two nights included Sarah Elizabeth Campbell, Champ Hood and Rich Minus.
Casner edited about 110 minutes. Foley wanted to sell it for five dollars, with a dollar going to the homeless, but the first cassette, Live at the Austin Outhouse (...And Not There), was sold after his death to pay for his burial. Lost Art Records later remastered about half of the material for a twelve-track CD. Country Standard Time wrote that it was really Foley's show, and Robert Christgau picked out Clay Pigeons. The complete two nights, with all the stage talk, came out as The Complete Outhouse Sessions in 2023.
