Despite the title, the concert was recorded at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, not the Royal Albert Hall in London, a mistake carried over from bootleg editions. The electric half had circulated on bootleg LPs from late 1970 or early 1971. The Manchester source was confirmed after a 1995 bootleg of a proposed Columbia release. The heckle of "Judas" can be heard on the recording.
Disc one is solo and acoustic. Disc two is electric, with Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Mickey Jones. The set reached 19 in the UK and 31 in the US, and went gold in the US. Dave Marsh, reviewing the bootleg in Creem in 1971, called it the most supremely elegant piece of rock and roll he had heard. Pitchfork and Uncut each gave it ten out of ten.
