Written by Marley and running 7:40 in A minor, it ties the biblical Exodus to Rastafarian hopes of repatriation and freedom. It was recorded in London after the 1976 attack on Marley, and the album title came before the song.
The single reached number 14 in Britain, number three on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 and number 19 on the R&B chart. It was the first Marley single to receive wide American black radio airplay. Billboard later called it a scorching mash-up of funk, reggae and disco.
