Recorded in five places over a year and a half, from the Dunn County hunting lodge to a Montreal apartment. Vernon told NPR he built it around the title song, adding three very different tracks as a palate cleanser after the debut. Jagjaguwar pointed to piano, slide guitar and vocoder, and set the seasons at its centre, the label noting that where the album was about the cold, this was about the warmth that gets you through it.
It reached 16 on the Billboard 200 and topped the UK independent chart. Stereogum's Stephen Deusner later called it "arguably the most consequential EP of the 2000s." A tenth anniversary edition in March 2020 added four live recordings from the 2018 tour.
