Eno went into Island Studios in July 1975 with nothing written. After four unproductive days he turned to his Oblique Strategies cards, and began coming up with new ideas. Only five of the fourteen tracks have vocals, and on seven he played every instrument. Robert Fripp, Phil Collins, Percy Jones, Rod Melvin, John Cale and Paul Rudolph came in on others. Fripp's solo on "St. Elmo's Fire" was an improvisation Eno asked to imitate an electrical charge in a Wimshurst generator, and it is credited as "Wimshurst guitar". The "castanet guitars" are electric guitars played with mallets. A detail from Tom Phillips's After Raphael is on the cover, and an extract of the title track became the theme of the BBC Two series Arena.
It did not chart in Britain or America; its only contemporary chart success was number 24 in New Zealand. Christgau first gave it an A-minus, the Village Voice poll placed it 11th among the albums of 1976, and Rolling Stone ranked it 338 in 2020. Mike Powell's 2016 Pitchfork review opens: "Another Green World remains his definitive album."
