Buena Vista Social Club, 1997

Released
16 September 1997
Recorded
April 1996
Studio
EGREM Studios, Havana
Label
World Circuit

This was the last record made in World Circuit's three-week session at EGREM, which began in March 1996. Every morning during the sessions for the Afro-Cuban All Stars album and then for Buena Vista Social Club, Rubén González waited for the studio doors to open and rushed to the piano. When both albums were finished he was still playing, so he was invited to record his own record, to choose his repertoire and to play as long as he liked.

With almost no rehearsal the band played a set of classic Cuban tunes as a series of descargas, or Cuban jam sessions. The album reached number 17 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums and was his international debut. In 2014 the Independent Music Companies Association gave it a diamond award for sales of at least 200,000 copies in Europe.
