Recorded in 1967 to follow up the success of Alegria, Alegria at the TV Record festival, it moved away from the bossa nova of Domingo toward rock and psychedelia, mixed with pop, Indian music, bossa nova and the music of Bahia. Four arrangers shared the work: Júlio Medaglia, Sandino Hohagen, Damiano Cozzella and the producer Manoel Barenbein, with the Beat Boys, Os Mutantes and others as backing bands. David Drew Zingg took the cover photograph, Rogério Duarte designed it, and Caetano wrote the liner notes.

It was very popular on release, AllMusic gives it five stars, and it entered the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. Caetano himself later called it "amateurish and confused."
