In the story of Nude, this is the moment the hero receives his summons to the Japanese army and, with no other choice, obeys. Susan Hoover's lyric has him accept the call, swear loyalty and resign himself to the killing ahead and its lasting moral weight. Latimer wrote the music. It was recorded at Abbey Road in September 1980 with Colin Bass singing lead, alongside Latimer, Andy Ward, Duncan Mackay and Mel Collins, and Chris Green adding cello on this track only.

When a Japanese fan explained the album's background on the Camel mailing list in 1997, Hoover replied that Onoda had been the original inspiration but that the album was written for anyone facing hard choices. She added that it was also written for Mr. Kato, a drafted salesman later condemned over his treatment of prisoners of war.

Live and later

setlist.fm counts 135 Camel performances, their eleventh most played song. Live versions appear on On the Road 1981 and on Pressure Points, recorded at Hammersmith Odeon in 1984. Colin Bass recorded it for his solo album Live Vol. 2: Acoustic Songs (2000), and in September 2025 Latimer released an acoustic version with the cellist Barry Phillips on Bandcamp. The upload in the hypersongs web is the original 1981 recording, from a 2009 digital reissue rather than the 2023 remix.
