A Song for You

The fourth album, which Richard called arguably their finest, with Goodbye to Love and Top of the World.
Carpenters, 1972

Released

Jack Daugherty

Richard intended the album as a concept of sorts, with the title song, written and first recorded by Leon Russell, opening and closing the set. Six songs came out as A-side singles internationally. Hurting Each Other reached number 2, It's Going to Take Some Time number 12, Goodbye to Love number 7 and I Won't Last a Day Without You number 11 when it was issued in 1974. Top of the World was held back until late 1973, when it went to number one.

Richard wrote that Goodbye to Love began when he watched the 1940 Bing Crosby film Rhythm on the River, in which a song of that name is mentioned but never heard. He wrote the opening lines, finished the choral ending in London in late 1971, and Bettis added the words. He wanted a melodic fuzz guitar solo and chose Tony Peluso, who led Instant Joy, the group backing Mark Lindsay on an early tour. Richard said detractors heard the solo and thought the duo might have more adventure than they supposed, while some fans felt they had sold out.

Cash Box ranked the album number 26 among the top albums of 1972.
