First released as a single in the UK on Island in 1970 and in the US on A&M in June 1971, it appears on Teaser and the Firecat, and on the single labels it is spelled Moon Shadow. In the US it reached number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 10 on the Easy Listening chart. Stevens considers it his favorite of his old songs. He wrote it on holiday in Spain, he said in 2009, as a kid from London's West End who had never seen the moon on its own in the dark and who looked down and saw his shadow. In a Boston radio interview he described dancing on the rocks where the waves splashed, under a bright moon, and singing the song.
A 1977 animated short built on it, narrated by Spike Milligan, followed Teaser and his Firecat as they find the fallen moon and put it back in the sky. The 2012 musical Moonshadow, with music from throughout his career, opened at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne, received mixed reviews and closed four weeks early. Rolling Stone's Timothy Crouse called the song simple and unadorned, with beauty in its mystery. He played it at Glastonbury in 2023.
