St. Elsewhere is the debut album of Gnarls Barkley, the duo of Danger Mouse (production and mixing) and Cee-Lo Green (vocals). It came out on 24 April 2006 in the United Kingdom, where it debuted at number one, and in May in the United States, where it peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and was certified double platinum. The labels were Downtown, Atlantic, Warner Bros. and Lex. Green has said a week of sessions in Atlanta produced Crazy and the album, with Danger Mouse bringing in brief instrumentals to see whether they could hold Green's attention for two minutes.
Danger Mouse told New York magazine he wanted to fuse melody with experimentation, as in the late-1960s music he admired. The pair built a backstory for Gnarls Barkley, claiming the character taught Kraftwerk English, and wore costumes like the character Alex from A Clockwork Orange in publicity photographs. The album holds an average of 81 out of 100 on Metacritic, won the 2007 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album, and was nominated for Album of the Year, with Crazy nominated for Record of the Year. PopMatters rated it the best release of 2006.
