Reading
Andrew Sherriff, Stephen Patman and Simon Rowe formed Chapterhouse in Reading in 1987, with Jon Curtis on bass and Ashley Bates on drums. Rowe later put the band down to friendship and shared interests. Their very first show went out under the name Incest, and they were Chapterhouse by their first London date, opening for Spacemen 3. At first they played covers, from the Byrds and the Beatles to Pebbles garage songs and the Stooges, and Sherriff told Melody Maker in 1991 that they went months without settling on a name.
They rehearsed and gigged for more than a year before making a demo. On 15 January 1989, with only four shows behind them, they cut four songs at the White House Recording Studio in Weston-super-Mare, a room Slowdive also used. That year they moved to London, where support slots with Spacemen 3 got them filed at first with British acid rock.
Dedicated and Whirlpool
Their first vinyl, in 1990, was a flexi EP given away with the magazine Sniffin' Rock, which also carried Spacemen 3. Curtis left to study and Russell Barrett took over on bass. The band signed to Dedicated, a UK label distributed through BMG and RCA that was also home to Spiritualized, and released the Freefall EP in September 1990 and the Sunburst EP in November; Sunburst included a cover of the Beatles' Rain and Something More, produced by Robin Guthrie.
In March 1991 came Pearl, built on a looped Led Zeppelin drum break with Rachel Goswell of Slowdive singing backing vocals. It reached 67 in Britain and 7 on the American modern rock chart. Whirlpool followed on 29 April, reaching 23 on the UK albums chart and 2 on the independent chart. On 23 August they played the main stage at the Reading Festival in the slot straight after Nirvana.
The autumn single Mesmerise, which sampled John Barry and Don Black's This Way Mary, made 60 in Britain and 21 on the US alternative chart, and Robert Smith said it fed into the Cure's Wish, claiming he once played it twenty times in a night. The British press had already turned: by October 1991 Melody Maker was calling them "shoegazers, underachievers, Southern softies".
Blood Music and the split
She's a Vision and We Are the Beautiful led into Blood Music, released on 6 September 1993 with a team of producers including Pascal Gabriel. Early copies came with Pentamerous Metamorphosis, a reworking by Global Communication. Patman later felt the production had become overblown and that the producers did not suit the band, and the group eventually gave Warp half the ownership of the Global Communication record to settle a dispute.
Chapterhouse split in 1994. Rownderbowt (1996) gathered singles, B-sides and demos, some with Slowdive's Simon Scott on drums. Sherriff went on to Bio.com and then, from 1997, to composing and sound design at Adelphoi Music, where Patman and Bates joined him in 2001. Rowe joined Mojave 3 and much later released a solo album, Everybody's Thinking (2023). Bates formed Cuba and then joined Tunng.
Return
Most of their records were out of print on CD until Cherry Red reissued Whirlpool in 2006, followed by a best of in 2007. In 2008 Ulrich Schnauss, who had covered Love Forever, brought them on stage to play it with him at Truck Festival. A one-off Reverence headline show at the ICA in London in November 2009 grew into a short reunion: the Scala in March 2010, Japan with Schnauss in April, and a North American tour that the Icelandic ash cloud pushed back from May to October 2010, after Patman was stranded in Japan and missed his visa interview. The reunion ended that year.
Cherry Red's six-disc Chronology (2023) added an unreleased third album, and Sonic Cathedral issued the 1989 session as White House Demos in May 2025. Slide Away Fest announced a full reunion that September, and the Whirlpool 35 tour of 2026 has taken them to the United States with Hum and Nothing, to Italy and to Latin America, with first Irish shows booked for November. Patman credits Andy Ross of Food Records with coining shoegaze, a put-down that stuck; Chapterhouse are counted in that first wave alongside Lush, Moose, Ride and Slowdive, and Pitchfork placed Whirlpool seventeenth among the fifty best shoegaze albums in 2016.
