Recorded in New York in October 1960 and released by Candid in January 1961. The quartet of Mingus, Eric Dolphy, Ted Curson and Dannie Richmond had been playing the material for weeks at The Showplace, and Mingus introduces the songs as if speaking to an audience, which makes this studio album seem live. Candid was founded by Nat Hentoff and gave Mingus more freedom than the major labels. The set holds Folk Forms No. 1, Original Faubus Fables, What Love? and All the Things You Could Be by Now If Sigmund Freud's Wife Was Your Mother. The Penguin Guide to Jazz lists it in its core collection.
