The song features a solo lead vocal by Alfa Anderson. Kathy Sledge said it had been slated for Sister Sledge, whose background vocals were kept on the final track. Sister Sledge recorded He's the Greatest Dancer, which Edwards and Rodgers had meant for Chic, in exchange. Rodgers listed it with Le Freak and Dance, Dance, Dance as more commercial than Everybody Dance.
It reached number one on the Billboard dance club chart in November 1978, number 5 on the R&B chart in April 1979 and number 7 on the Hot 100 in May 1979, staying 19 weeks. In Britain it reached number 4, the highest of any Chic single, and stayed 11 weeks. The seven-inch edit runs 3:28 with (Funny) Bone on the B-side. Stereogum's Tom Breihan noted that it peaked at number 7 as the follow-up to Le Freak. In 2004 it was the B-side of a reissue of Good Times.
Covers
Jody Watley recorded it for her 2006 album The Makeover. Her version was released as a single in 2007 and reached number one on the Hot Dance Club Play chart for the week of 16 June 2007, produced by DJ Spinna with Rodgers on guitar. Edwards had produced her 1987 single Don't You Want Me. In 2015 Lady Gaga recorded a new version with Rodgers for a Tom Ford fashion campaign.
