Robert Lamm wrote Saturday in the Park, from Chicago V, and told Billboard it came from watching a film he had shot in Central Park over a couple of years in the early 1970s. He edited the footage into a narrative and jotted down ideas as he watched, and he described it as the peace and love atmosphere of parks on a Saturday. Lamm sings lead, with Cetera on the chorus and Kath on lead guitar.
It reached number 3 on the Hot 100, was the band's highest-charting single at the time, and sold more than a million copies in the United States. Billboard ranked it as the 76th song of 1972. Ultimate Classic Rock wrote that in the summer of 1972 you could not escape it. In the studio version, the line about singing Italian songs is followed by Lamm singing a line from Eh Cumpari and then Italian-sounding nonsense words.
