I Feel Free has music by Jack Bruce and lyrics by Pete Brown. It was recorded in September 1966 at Ryemuse Studios, and Robert Stigwood decided to leave it off the British edition of Fresh Cream and release it as a single. It was the first product of the Bruce and Brown songwriting team and a more typical sample of Cream's sound than their debut single, Wrapping Paper. Bruce's falsetto vocal is a feature.
Reaction issued it as Cream's second British single, on the same day as the album. It entered the British chart on 17 December 1966 at number 50, peaked at number 11 on 28 January 1967 and spent 12 weeks on the chart. Atco issued it as their American debut single and as the opening track of the US edition of Fresh Cream. Cream mimed it on BBC television's Top of the Pops on 11 January 1967.
Versions followed from the Amboy Dukes in 1967, Mark King of Level 42 in 1984, Belinda Carlisle in 1987 and David Bowie, on Black Tie White Noise in 1993. Bruce himself recorded it in 1986 for a Renault 21 commercial, and it became his only solo British hit, at number 95.
