Culture Club's third single in Europe and first in the US and Canada, released in September 1982. It followed two singles that failed to chart, and became the band's first UK number one, holding the top spot for three weeks in October 1982. It was the fifth best-selling UK single of 1982. In the US it spent three weeks at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in March and April 1983, and it reached number one in Canada and Australia.

Producer Steve Levine said the team felt strongly they had a great track, and Virgin agreed. BBC Radio 2's David Hamilton made it his record of the week within days of release, and the single rose quickly after the group's first Top of the Pops appearance, to which they were invited the night before after Shakin' Stevens pulled out.

The UK video, directed by Julien Temple, shows George on trial in a courtroom filmed in Islington Town Hall. Violent Femmes, Adam Lambert and Blue Lagoon, whose 2005 version was a hit in Europe, have covered the song. The band played it at Edinburgh Castle in July 2014.
