The Quietus said When Seasons Change could be the keynote address of 1975 and was the thematic cornerstone of the record, a song about the onset of winter and the struggle to survive. Paste described church bells ringing it into focus, with guitars, organs and bass coiling around each other, and heard in it a masterpiece among many. It quotes the lyric asking how anyone can survive when everybody has been made a sacrifice.
Alexis Petridis of the Guardian called it astonishing and picked out the lines about scufflin' times and about looking around and seeing yourself so weak and vulnerable.
