Jules Shear wrote and recorded the song for his 1983 album Watch Dog, produced by Todd Rundgren. Shear thought of his own version as a folk song and described Lauper's electronic reading as a drum machine and techno thing. She moved the key up a minor third. Shear sings a wordless falsetto near the end and the lower harmony in the choruses. Anton Fig played drums, Rob Hyman keyboards and Eric Bazilian bass. Shear later said that her version paid for his New York apartment and was his favorite cover.
Released as the fourth single in September 1984, it debuted at number 49 and peaked at number five on the Hot 100, her fourth consecutive top five. In Britain it reached only number 64. Jill Mapes of Pitchfork wrote that on it Lauper "holds one of my favorite glory notes in all of pop music". Lauper re-recorded it for The Body Acoustic in 2005 with Shaggy. Tori Amos played it at Royce Hall in 2005, and Sleeping at Last released a version in March 2014.
