Bowie arrived at Cherokee with fragments, and the band built the arrangements around them. He was using cocaine heavily and later remembered only pieces of the sessions. In a 1997 Q interview he called the record extremely dark and a piece of work by an entirely different person.

It reached number five in the UK and number three in the US. TVC 15 was released as a single on 30 April 1976 and reached number 33 in the UK. Lester Bangs of Creem called the album a masterpiece, Dave Marsh was negative, and Christgau called TVC 15 his favorite piece of rock and roll in a very long time.
