Buhloone is a phonetic spelling of balloon, and Posdnuos described the title as meaning they were popular but not trying to make pop music. The intro repeats the hook "it might blow up, but it won't go pop" until the sound of a balloon bursting replaces the last word. The jazz veterans Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis play on Patti Dooke and I Am I Be. Guru delivers the spoken chorus of Patti Dooke, Biz Markie appears on Stone Age, and Dres of Black Sheep appears on En Focus. The Japanese acts Scha Dara Parr and Takagi Kan are on Long Island Wildin'. Breakadawn, the first single, samples Michael Jackson's I Can't Help It. Maseo's voice is heard only briefly, on Area.
Writing for Pitchfork in 2016, Andrew Nosnitsky called it a knotty and brilliant third album and noted that it runs under 50 minutes with just ten full rap songs. He quoted Posdnuos telling Vibe in 1993 that the group left their mistakes in because they sounded cool. Voters in the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll ranked it eighth for 1993, and Rolling Stone's Paul Evans praised its gorgeous groove. It was a critical success, and it was the group's biggest commercial failure to that point.
