Cripple Crow came out on September 13, 2005, and was Banhart's first release on XL Recordings. Its cover references the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band sleeve. Banhart, Andy Cabic, Noah Georgeson and Thom Monahan are credited as producers, and the record was recorded at Bearsville Studios. Emma O'Donnell played fiddle, and a dog named Gus is credited too.

Pitchfork's Brandon Stosuy wrote that the cast included Cabic, Georgeson, Monahan and members of Currituck Co., Espers, Yume Bitsu, The Blow, Feathers and CocoRosie. He noted more Spanish-sung tracks than on any earlier Banhart album, and described "Dragonflies" as a whispered duet with Matteah Baim that is over in under a minute.

The album sold 47,000 copies in the United States and received an Impala award for sales of 30,000 or more in Europe. A 20th anniversary deluxe edition was released on September 12, 2025, on Heavy Flowers.
