Mascis had the riff on a tour with the Jesus and Mary Chain, probably in England. He was singing I feel the pain of everyone when his friend John Brattin added and then I feel nothing, and let him keep the line. On the record Mascis plays drums and Johnson bass, and the track opens with a cork popping. It went to number four on Billboard's modern rock chart, the band's highest-charting single, and twenty-five in Britain. Mascis said that with a video on MTV you were suddenly much bigger than before.

Spike Jonze's video, the upload in the hypersongs web, has Mascis and Johnson playing golf through the streets of New York; Mascis said it was meant to be more violent. The song has turned up in Guitar Hero and Rock Band and in Dexter: New Blood, and Bruce Hornsby covered it in 2021. It is their second most played song, first performed at Lollapalooza in 1993, a year before release.
