Don Robertson wrote the song, and the Chordettes had the first hit with it in 1956, reaching number five on the US pop charts. Sonny James took it to number one on the country chart in 1968, and in 1973 Dave Edmunds had a number five hit in the UK with a version built on the wall of sound technique he borrowed from Phil Spector. Dion's remake opens his 1975 album and runs 6:51, the longest track on it. Spector produced it. It gave the album its title.
Other versions include those by Leo Kottke in 1974, Sandy Posey in 1978, who reached 21 on the country chart, and Anne Murray in 1993.
