Mann and Weil wrote it in 1975 as a possible comeback hit for Brenda Lee, who did not record it. It reached Parton through the producer Gary Klein, who had heard it on B. J. Thomas's recent album, and Thomas's version came out before hers. Klein said she begged him to add a steel guitar so that the record would not sound too pop, and he brought in Al Perkins. "She wanted people to be able to hear the steel guitar," Klein told the journalist Tom Roland, so that she could prove it was country if anyone said it was not.

Released in September 1977 as the title track of her album, it topped the US country singles chart for five weeks and reached number three on the Hot 100, her first significant pop crossover hit. It was nominated for the 1978 Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. In 2014 Katy Perry and Kacey Musgraves sang it together on CMT Crossroads, and they performed it again at the MusiCares tribute to Parton in February 2019. 156 performances are documented in her live history.
