The idea came at Dan Tana's, the Los Angeles restaurant and bar, where Frey and Henley were talking about beautiful women who cheat on their husbands. They noticed a young woman with an older, wealthy man, and Frey said she could not even hide those lyin' eyes. Henley said Frey was the main writer, with some input from him on the verses and the music. They wrote it while sharing a house in Trousdale, Beverly Hills. Frey said the story had always been there and that there were no sticking points.
Frey sings lead, the only song on the album where he does so alone. Szymczyk compiled the opening line, City girls just seem to find out early, from six takes across four days. The single reached 2 on the Hot 100, held back by Elton John's Island Girl, and 8 on the Country chart, their first country entry. It earned the band a Grammy, for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus, and a nomination for Record of the Year. Billboard and Rolling Stone each ranked it the band's seventh-greatest song. Lynn Anderson covered it in 1976.
