No Sound but the Wind

The song first appeared on record on the soundtrack to The Twilight Saga: New Moon in October 2009, in an early recording whose lyrics differ from the later definitive version. Drowned in Sound called it a stunning weepy piano ballad. It has had four lives on record: the soundtrack version; a live recording made at Rock Werchter on 2 July 2010 for Studio Brussel; a full-band studio take included on You Are Fading in the Unedited box set of 2011; and a new studio recording on Violence in 2018, which also closes the 2019 best-of Black Gold. NME heard the Violence version as an aching but hopeful lament about marching on against the odds.

The Rock Werchter recording was issued as a single in Belgium, with the performance serving as its video, and went to number one in Flanders, the band's second Belgian number one after Papillon. It went platinum there and was not released in the UK. The band were presented with a gold disc for it after a live set for Studio Brussel at Het Glazen Huis in Antwerp in December 2010.

Live

setlist.fm logs it first at the Cheese and Grain in Frome on 26 June 2008, a warm-up for the band's Pyramid Stage set at Glastonbury the next day. It has been played about 150 times since, most often in 2010, and was still in the set at Suikerrock in Belgium in August 2026. The upload in the hypersongs web is the 2009 New Moon soundtrack version, not the 2010 live single or the 2018 re-recording.
