The twenty-minute Tarkus suite took up the whole first side, with shorter pieces including Jeremy Bender, Bitches Crystal and A Time and a Place on the second. The sessions brought Emerson and Lake close to splitting. It reached one in the UK and nine in the US. Critics divided: the NME heard noisy showing off, while Chris Welch in Melody Maker found the suite dramatic and explosive.
