Released on 23 April 2001 as a double A-side with Star 69, the single peaked at number 10 in the UK. Bootsy Collins sings lead. On the album his normal vocal sits in the right channel and a copy pitched much deeper sits in the left. The track samples Sly and the Family Stone's Into My Own Thing, the Chambers Brothers' All Strung Out Over You and the X-Ecutioners' Word Play. Its chorus nods to Black Sheep's The Choice Is Yours (Revisited), the line about walking without rhythm quotes the novel Dune, and the halfway between the gutter and the stars line comes from Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan and gave the album its title.

Spike Jonze directed the video, shot in December 2000 in the lobby of the Marriott Hotel in Los Angeles, now the L.A. Grand Hotel Downtown. Christopher Walken, who trained as a dancer in musical theatre, had asked Jonze to film his dancing. He dances around the empty lobby, rides an elevator and flies around the mezzanine. Cook had been due to cameo, but was unavailable that weekend. The video won six awards at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards, including a Best Choreography award for Walken, and the 2002 Grammy for Best Music Video. VH1 ranked it the top video of all time in April 2002. After Walken was cast as Shaddam IV in Dune: Part Two, the clip enjoyed a revival, though Walken said he had not known of the song's Dune connection.
