Expensive Shit

Two sides, two moods: a furious joke about the police and his own excrement, then the patient groove of Water No Get Enemy.

Credited to Fela Ransome Kuti and the Africa 70 and issued in Nigeria on Soundworkshop (SWS 1001), it was one of roughly six albums he released in 1975. It was cut at Arc, the Lagos studio Ginger Baker had opened in 1973. The title song tells the story of his 1974 arrest: police planted a joint, he ate it, and they waited to test his stool, which by legend he swapped for another inmate's. The cover shows the women of his household.

The B-side, Water No Get Enemy, slows things down. Pitchfork's Paul Cooper told newcomers to start here. BBC Music's Nick Reynolds found the title song sarcastic, hilarious and righteously angry, and Rolling Stone placed the album at 402 in its 2020 list of the 500 greatest albums. Pitchfork had ranked it 78th among the best albums of the 1970s. MCA paired it with He Miss Road on CD in 2000, and Knitting Factory later reissued it on vinyl.
