Patuscada means a revel. The song belongs to the Filhos de Gandhy, the afoxé founded by Salvador dockworkers on 18 February 1949 and named after Gandhi, which parades at carnival in white under his pacifist ideals and now has more than ten thousand members. Gil had paraded with the group since his return from exile in 1972 and helped bring it back from near collapse. The song is part of the afoxé's own repertoire, and the group recorded it in a medley on its 1980 album. On Refavela it is credited to the afoxé, with an arrangement by Gil.

Gil sings over a wall of percussion played by Perinho Santana, Rubens Sabino, Bira da Silva, Geraldo, Paulinho Braga, Djalma, Eliseu, Canegal and Robertinho Silva, with Cidinho Teixeira on ARP strings and Pelanca do Kojak in the chorus. Alberto Cantalice of the Fundação Perseu Abramo counted it with Ilê Ayê and Balafon among the album's strongest tracks, all built on African rhythms.

setlist.fm logs Gil playing it five times, the latest at Circo Voador in Rio on 25 January 2019, and its first logged performance was by Rita Lee in October 1977, in the Refestança years. Saulo Fernandes has sung it live, and the Italian producers Janeiro released a 12-inch remix in 1996. The upload in the hypersongs web is the Refavela album version.
