Robert Hunter wrote the words in London in 1970, on the same afternoon as Brokedown Palace and To Lay Me Down, and Garcia added the melody. It was first played on 18 August 1970 at the Fillmore West. David Grisman plays mandolin on the record, and it was released as the B-side of the Truckin' single.

Pitchfork described it as a crystalline acoustic ballad with a hymnlike melody, and noted that its closing line, if I knew the way, I would take you home, was later used as a motto on the Peacemaker bus of the 12 Tribes, a group that followed the band on tour. Rolling Stone ranked it 334 on its 2024 list of the 500 greatest songs. It is heard in the 1985 film Mask and in the last scene of the television series Freaks and Geeks.
