Harris released A I A: Dream Loss and A I A: Alien Observer together on her own label, a thousand copies of each, from material recorded over four years. Dream Loss, she said, was older songs written before a hard time; Alien Observer was made mostly after it, much of it in a basement next to a power substation. Later she described it as after the evaporation, a spreading into mist, and admitted she had kept going back and changing things until they grew muddy.

Pitchfork's review found Alien Observer the more accessible and better-shaped of the pair, and the record appears at twenty-one in Pitchfork's list of the fifty best ambient albums, where it is called material and visceral while keeping its mystery. Kranky issued both as a double CD in 2012 and reissued the vinyl in 2019.
